Step 1: Block Adult Content on Your Router

Configure your router to automatically block inappropriate websites for all devices on your network

Cloudflare Family DNS Setup

Important: Network-Wide Protection

Protected Devices

These DNS settings will automatically protect all devices connected to your Wi-Fi:

📱
Phones
💻
Computers
📺
Smart TVs
🎮
Gaming

Not Protected

Devices using mobile data or other Wi-Fi networks won't be protected by these settings.

💡 Recommendation: For complete protection, also set up device-level filtering on phones and tablets (instructions in stage 1).

Save & Test

Save your settings and restart your router. Then test by:

  • • Reconnecting all devices to WiFi
  • • Checking that inappropriate sites are blocked
  • • Confirming normal websites still work

Step 2: Block Specific Websites

Add additional blocking for specific sites or categories if your router supports it

Website Blocking Options

Router-Based Blocking

Many routers have "Parental Controls" or "Access Restrictions" sections where you can:

  • • Block specific website URLs
  • • Block by keywords
  • • Set time-based restrictions
  • • Create different rules for different devices

Common Sites to Consider

Depending on your family's needs, you might want to block:

  • • Social media platforms
  • • Gaming websites
  • • Video streaming sites
  • • News/political sites
  • • Online shopping
  • • Forums and chat sites

Pro Tip: Start Simple

Begin with the DNS filtering above for automatic protection, then add specific site blocks as needed. This prevents an overwhelming setup process while still providing solid protection.

Step 3: Additional Family Guidelines

Simple practices to enhance your family's digital wellbeing

Remove Game Ads

Purchase ad-free versions of games or use apps that don't contain advertisements. Game ads often lead to inappropriate content.

Open Spaces

Keep device usage in common family areas rather than isolated rooms. This naturally encourages healthier usage patterns.

Stay Involved

Take an active role in understanding what your children do online. Guide them toward positive content and good digital habits.

Remember: Technology is a Tool

The goal isn't to eliminate technology, but to help your family use it in ways that support your values and wellbeing. Start with these simple protections and adjust as needed.
